In a heartfelt ceremony, the Laredo City Council celebrated Julie Bazan, executive director of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area of Texas, and her dedicated team for earning prestigious national recognition.
The group received the Center of Excellence Award from the National AHEC Organization, highlighting their tireless efforts in serving a medically underserved community. Mayor Victor Trevino praised their innovative programs that expand medical assistance options, bridging critical gaps in healthcare access.
Bazan emphasized that AHECs exist in every state, but this award elevates Laredo's profile on a national stage. She expressed gratitude to her team and board, noting it's the first such city acknowledgment since the organization's founding in 1993. "It's an amazing feeling knowing city leaders prioritized this," Bazan shared, beaming with pride over sharing the honor with her colleagues.
Mercurio Martinez, president of the AHEC Center, hailed Bazan as a role model amid Laredo's physician shortage. He highlighted her leadership, including her role as president of the national AHEC organization, which amplifies their impact far beyond Texas borders. Martinez noted AHEC's support for local groups, like veterans, fostering community health initiatives that promote equity and resilience.
This recognition underscores AHEC's vital role in addressing healthcare disparities in border regions. By partnering with local stakeholders, they deliver tailored programs that empower residents to access essential services. As Laredo faces ongoing challenges, Bazan's team continues to innovate, ensuring no one is left behind in the pursuit of better health.
The award not only honors past achievements but inspires future efforts. With national eyes on Laredo, AHEC is poised to expand its reach, attracting more resources and talent. This milestone celebrates a community united in its commitment to health equity, proving that dedicated service can transform lives. |
